Bonnie Smart is a Calgarian who is currently enrolled as a fourth-year student at the Alberta University of the Arts, majoring in the Media Arts Interactivity stream. She is completing an artist residency/internship with the Calgary Arts Academy middle school campus - working alongside the Year 6/7 staff and students. The projects with the residency include  assisting with teaching stop motion video in mixed media and co-hosting a 3D modeling workshop during lunch hours.

She has been developing coding lessons for Year 7 students to help build awareness in computer programming and the more rudimentary skill sets that are often overlooked with the introduction of artificial intelligence. She hopes to progress the ideas of STEM vs STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) working through concepts like variables, mapping coordinates and visual outputs familiar to the Year 7 curriculum. Through this research she hopes to advance the belief that arts-immersion is essential to equipping youth with better skill-sets to increase their successes in learning and to help build their confidence.

She holds an Architectural Technologist Diploma from the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology, specializing in Building Design Technology. She spent five years working in commercial, retail, and theatrical sculpting; and equally as much time as a technologist - drafting, estimating and coordinating a variety of residential, commercial and landscaping construction projects.

Smart has recently been exploring large scale soft sculpture with metal armatures - a combination of craft and new media.
